To maintain the longevity and quality of Wander Collective extensions, it’s essential to follow these care guidelines:
- Use Mild, pH-Balanced Shampoos(4.5 to 5.5): Avoid shampoos containing alkaline substances or potassium hydroxide, sodiumhydroxide, as these ingredients can weaken the hair and the keratin bonds of the extensions.
- No Clarifying Shampoos: Do not use clarifying or highly stripping shampoos on the extensions. Such products are too harshand may strip away the hair’s moisture and color, leading to dryness or damage.
- Dry Bonds Thoroughly: Do not allow the bonded area of the extensions (for example, the Genius Weft head or keratin bond)to stay damp for prolonged periods. Excess moisture at the bond can break down the keratin adhesive, causing the extensionsto loosen or shed. Always dry the roots and bond area carefully after washing.
- Limit Hair Washing: Shampoo the extensions only every 3 to 5 days. Over-washing can dry out the hair or loosen the bondsover time. In between washes, you can use a sulfate-free, gentle dry shampoo on the scalp if needed, avoiding the bonds.
- Avoid Oils at the Scalp: Prevent excessive oil buildup near the weft or bond area. Do not apply oil-based products directly tothe scalp or the attachment points of the extensions. Oils can seep into the bonds or tapes, weakening the adhesive andcausing slippage or shedding. If using serums or conditioners, apply them mid-shaft down to the ends of the hair only.
- Beware of Certain Sunscreens: Avoid using sunblock or sunscreen products on the hair (or hands that will touch the hair) ifthey contain Avobenzone or Octocrylene. These chemical sunscreen agents have been known to interact with extension hair, potentially causing discoloration or an orange/pink hue on lighter extensions. If sun protection is needed for the hair, recommend a mineral-based sunscreen or wear a hat/scarf to shield the hair.
Brushing & Moisture Maintenance
- Secure the install at the roots while brushing to avoid tugging and loosening at the scalp.
- Use a loop brush, wide-tooth comb, or soft-bristle brush specifically designed for extensions.
- Always brush from the ends upward to prevent unnecessary tension on the bonds or wefts.
- Apply a moisturizing serum or oil to midshaft and ends to maintain softness and shine.
- Use a hydrating conditioning masque at least once a week from midshaft to ends to maintain moisture and luster.
Sleeping with Extensions
- Always dry hair completely before sleeping—never sleep with wet extensions.
- Secure hair in a loose braid or low ponytail to prevent tangling.
- Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and minimize breakage.
Heat Styling Precautions
- Use heat tools on a low to medium setting (below 350°F / 177°C) to prevent damage.
- Always apply a heat protectant spray before using curling irons, flat irons, or blow dryers.
- Avoid direct heat on the bonds, tapes, or weft attachment points, as it can weaken the adhesive or melt keratin bonds.
Product Buildup & Hydration
- Avoid overusing dry shampoo, hairsprays, or styling products, as they can cause buildup and weigh down extensions.
- If extensions start feeling dry, use a leave-in conditioner sparingly to add moisture without making them heavy.
Professional Maintenance & Removal
- Schedule regular touch-ups every 6–8 weeks to ensure bonds remain secure and to prevent matting at the roots.
- Only a trained professional should remove and reinstall extensions to avoid damage to the natural hair.
